Power System Disturbances - Planning and Operational Perspectives

Topic: Power System Disturbances - Planning and Operational Perspectives

Note: This event will be held at the BC Hydro Edmonds office complex in Burnaby

Electrical grids are the backbone of modern societies, and their reliability is critical. We are all familiar with electricity outages caused by weather and other observable events but there are many other disturbances that affect the grid and need to be managed.  Planning and operating an electrical grid to be able to withstand disturbances requires unique tools and procedures. This presentation will examine the approaches taken in the planning and operational horizons to manage the BC Hydro grid using software, control systems, and staff,  including tools designed and built in British Columbia. The discussion will include:

  • The evolution of planning and operating grids and some historical disturbances
  • The capabilities of modern planning and operating tools
  • Recent disturbances and their impacts

Our presenters are Dr. Xi Lin, Director of Engineering Services at Powertech Labs, and Asher Steed, Director of T&D Grid Operations, BC Hydro.

No catering will be provided at this event, however the BC Hydro cafeteria is adjacent to the auditorium and opens at 7am. Since there is no catering, the in-person registration price has been reduced.
